  Live With Dr. Aleida Harris

Michael Johnson retired from the Phoenix Police Department in 1995 as a homicide investigator, after a 21-year career with the department. He served as a community liaison for the Phoenix Police Department and was named Detective of the Year in 1992. He also served as president and chief executive officer of Nkosi Inc., a security and investigation firm.

Councilman Johnson began his four-year term on the Phoenix City Council on Jan. 2, 2002.  He represents District 8, which encompasses a portion of central Phoenix, east Phoenix and much of southeast Phoenix.  District 8 is quite diverse and home to the downtown Phoenix area, Sky Harbor International Airport, Arizona State University Downtown Campus, TGEN, the University of Arizona Medical School Downtown Phoenix, the new Phoenix Convention Center, the Phoenix Children’s Museum, the Arizona Science Center and it’s home to the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Councilman Johnson currently chairs the Downtown, Aviation and  Economy City Council Subcommittee and serves on the Housing and Neighborhoods Subcommittee and the Public Safety and Veterans Subcommittee.

Dr. Harris interviewed Councilman Johnson on a variety of subjects from his early days as a Phoenix born child to the present. Currently, Councilman Johnson faces re-election on September 1.  In preparation for his career in public service, he relied heavily on several core principles: (1) Love of God and Family. (2) Heartfelt desire to help the community. (3) Support for and from his family, friends and the community.

Dr. Harris began with Councilman Johnson's childhood here in Phoenix and continued with his life as a Phoenix Police Officer, from street patrol to detective and on to retirement in 1995. Before leaving the department, he received several honors and awards.

Life as an officer enabled Councilman Johnson to feel the "pulse" of the community. He has been able to see the needs of the community and to address those needs as he represented the citizens of District 8.  Since his election in 2002, he has developed strategies for economic improvements in District 8, job creation, youth education and support programs, senior programs, health and safety improvements, along with crime fighting strategies for the community.  District 8 is the only district in the city where the percentage of crime has fallen overall.  While crime continues to be a problem in the city, his law enforcement background has help
his efforts to reach out to the community. He has addressed the causes of crime and provided the leadership needed to help resolve those causes.

His knowledge of the district is the key ingredient going forward.  This knowledge will allow him to continue to address the needs of the citizens of District 8.  During the show, citizens of the district came out in support of Councilman Johnson.  Dr. Harris ask the councilman about some of his challenges in life. He related the values he cherishes and how those values helped him when he was falsely accused by some in the print media in his early days in public service. Those same values helped him through a financial crisis, rearing children as a single parent, job stresses and demands and many more.  Through them all, Councilman Johnson held on to those values.

Mr. Johnson relates his experiences on family, single parenting, self-employment, job creation, overcoming personal and business obstacles, community support, political decisions, setting goals for the future and his love for the community and the desire to further help his district with it's own challenges.
